Homosexual Discussion ForumWhat if Homosexuality is Genetic? While I am not here to argue with you, I would like to share some thoughts. Humans have many instincts such as rooting (where an infant will turn it's head in the direction of a brush on the cheek at which time the infant will suckle -- An instinct that allows the infant child to feed); however, many believe that other than the few that we loose after infancy, humans do not have any other characteristics that could fit into the definition of Instinct. instinct n. 1) An inborn pattern of behavior that is characteristic of a species and is often a response to specific environmental stimuli: the spawning instinct in salmon; altruistic instincts in social animals. 2) A powerful motivation or impulse. 3) An innate capability or aptitude: an instinct for tact and diplomacy. Instincts are beyond our control. For us to assume Heterosexuality is an instinct, we would have to assume that it maps to one of these three definitions. Heterosexuality does not involve an inborn pattern of behavior that is a characteristic to our species. Perhaps the notion of breeding (what does go on in the sex act) could be somewhat of an instinct, but it would be across the board -- not just limited to heterosexual sex. If it was a powerful motivation or impulse, kids all over the place through little will of their own will be trying to copulate with anything in sight. If it was an innate ability then every time a man and a woman get together to breed, then we must assume that they both know what they are doing and what goes where. If we say that Heterosexuality is innate, then we must allow folks to also claim that Homosexuality may also be innate (via some "gay gene" or something of that nature). Just because it feels natural to some doesn't mean it is an instinct. If that was the case, I could say that Homosexuality is my innate instinct, 'cause it sure feels natural to me. The glorious statement that can be made is that God has given us a Free Will. God has not burdened us with mindless instincts that we must follow in order to procreate, catch food, etc... When it comes to the age old argument of Nature vs. Nurture, my money is on the notion that most of our habits and preferences come from social, personal, and interpersonal reactions to the stimuli that are around us. As our minds develop, so do our perceptions of the world around us. Therein, I believe homosexuality is tucked. Through our perceptions in our society and our lives, we take on such preferences. Just my $0.02 I am suprised I did not hand out my snide scarcastic remark about how "I want to get beat up and left for dead. I want people to hate me. I want to be kicked out of my church, and have all my christian "friends" kick me to the curb. How can I do this... let me see... Oh! I can be gay. I choose to be gay." But I guess I just made it. Hehe I couldn't help myself. |
