Confession of sin, repentance or turning from sin, and being clothed in the righteousness of Christ; this is the gift of God bestowed on those who really believe His promises and accept His gift. Yes, we will occasionally fall short of God’s perfection, which is why we all need His grace in our lives.
So true, as the Bible says:And one of the malefactors which were hanged railed on him, saying, If thou be Christ, save thyself and us. But the other answering rebuked him, saying, Dost not thou fear God, seeing thou art in the same condemnation? And we indeed justly; for we receive the due reward of our deeds: but this man hath done nothing amiss. And he said unto Jesus, Lord, remember me when thou comest into thy kingdom. And Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, To day shalt thou be with me in paradise. Luke 23:39-43
One evildoer was not repentant but just wanted a way of escape for his crime with no regret. On the other hand the other thief acknowledged his wrongdoings and turned to the Lord for repentance.
That leads to eternal life and a way of escape from the sinful nature.
