ArchivedThe Crucifixion of Christ
Based on Paul’s being scourged with 39 lashes; Christ’s scouring is presumed to have been the same number. Now, what will 39 lashes with a whip that probably had bone or metal in the cords do to a man’s back? Christ’s flesh would have been hanging from Him from cuts so deep the bones of His spine would have been visible. The blood from Christ’s scourging would have congealed to His garments and being stripped to be robed in purple would have opened the wounds. A cohort of Roman soldiers consisted of 1/10 of a legion or about 600 men. The thorns would have ripped Christ’s forehead as well as His scalp and blood would have streaked down His face; 600 men then took turns beating Him, which would have pulverized His face revealing the bones leaving His features indiscernible as human. The open wounds on His back would have again congealed with the purple robe and being stripped again would reopen those wounds. Christ’s final humiliation was being nailed to the cross – naked! Roman soldiers would not have concerned themselves with modesty. As we enter into the holiday season; I pray each of us will truly understand the price Christ paid for each of us and that each of us will realize that while Christmas is a time of joy and celebration that Christ’s true mission and purpose was the cross and our salvation. I would also pray that each of us will visualize the truth of Christ’s suffering out of love for each of us and love others, regardless of their spiritual condition, with the same love. |
