ArchivedBible quotesSince you did not name the big one with several hundred million members, I will have to presume I know what one you are referring to and that one adds "tradition" to the Bible and does not accept the Bible as God's final word. They pull verses out of context out of the Bible to establish doctrines; they use "human reasoning and logic" to "interpret" the Bible. There are as many "interpretations" of the Bible as their are people who attempt to "interpret" it. However, if those who "interpret" the Bible would simply try to "understand" the Bible there would not be thousands of "interpretations". If in the context of a long discussion with many denominations involved and in response to a post I state: "You are making dogma based on ludicrous interpretations"; you can "interpret" the "you" to mean a specific person, a denomination, or all who are posting to the discussion. The only way to understand my intent is to ask me, or use your innate intellect to understand my use of the "you". Let me give you a specific example of "interpretation". This is a straight forward statement that does not need interpretation. However, there are those who "interpret" this verse to mean that since Eve was Adam's wife she is also the reason sin entered into the world. By substituting Eve for Adam and Mary for Christ you get a doctrine that is based on an "interpretation" based on human reasoning. However, this totally ignores the rest of the Bible. Adam made a decision based on Eve's deception therefore it was Adam's decision not Eve's deception that caused the fall of mankind. The Bible "interprets" the Bible. Here is another example. Based only on this verse many Christians assign the destruction of Sodom and the cities of the plain to homosexuality. However, God gives us His reasons for the destruction of Sodom and her daughters here: Gomorrah, Admah, and Zeboiim were also destroyed at the same time so to assign one sin commited in Sodom as the reason for the destruction of all 4 cities is an "interpretation" based on lack of understanding God's word. Add to this one city, Zoar, was spared as a refuge for Lot and you have an "interpretation" that lacks substance and understanding of God's attempt to educate His people. If you insist that "understanding" and "interpreting" God's word are one and the same concept then yes, there is only one correct "interpretation" of God's word - God's interpretation. He wrote it, He interprets it, He judges those who "interpret" it in such as way as to void His truth. |
