I don't understand how you could NOT think it was wrong, unjust, and immoral to own another person. Please explain this to me.
What would have changed over the past 4 thousands or so years if it was called a sin in the old testament? How would have people took it? Would they have rebelled against everybody? This has broad implications that takes a while to consider. If he called it a sin would anybody even care?
Guess we will never know...
The Jews was slaves themselves in Egypt, which God delivered them from, would seem from a atheists point of view that since it was men who wrote the bible they would have stated that slavery should be abolished?
The Isrealites also owned slaves remember. The Law protected the right to own them, get reimbursed for hurting one of them, addressed the proper way to sell you daughter, ect.
But since we know that God wrote the bible what would have been his reason not to state it. I beleive that in of itself slavery is not a sin. The problem that makes slavery a sin is that the people who do it and have done it continued to do it in a state of sin. Remember, treat others the way you would want to be treated?
I think if you can own a slave at all you are violate the Golden Rule. After all, who would want to be a slave?
You may consider slavery a sin today, and if so, then guess what, then it is a sin for you to do it. A sin is also anything you know which is wrong, which you do or don't do. Doesn't have to be in the bible for it to be a sin.
So are you admitting that morality is subjective? That what my opinions are matter in whether an action is right or wrong? Sorry, this seems to go against the whole "Bilbe is the only sorce of morality, man is inherantly evil" bullcrap...
And let me show this example about the church in 2 parts:
1st group
Jewish Church used the bible to kill Christians.
Same Church use the bible to kill Jews, crusades.
Hitler used the bible to kill Jews.
Same Church supported slavery by using the bible.
Same Church uses the bible to call abortion not murder.
Same Church uses the bible to call homosexuality not a sin
Same Church beleives in a pre-trib rapture.
So believing in a pre-trib rapture is tantamount to all these other things? WTF?
What does this group have in common?
Ummm, that you don't agree with them?
The bible doesn't support their view! They want the bible to say something so bad they can't even read what's before their eyes!
They change it to say something else.
I don't think you can use the Bible to say "abortion is not murder" any more than you can use it to say the reverse.
More to the point, scholars and great church leaders have debated what parts of the Bible mean for centuries. Not everything in it is crystal clear. Or do you think you know what God mean by EVERYTHING he said?
As for comparing homosexuality to slavery is a pointless argument in of itself. If we do that then we must also include the discrimination of the Jews into the argument, because they have servered more then any other group in the histroy of the world!
I have no idea what the Jews have to do with this, other then that people used the Bible to discriminate against them also...However, I'm not talking about homosexuality in this thread. I'm talking about slavery. I'm talking about the Bible seeming to condone slavery, even of virgin women who were raped by their captors. I am talking about ultimate morality.
My point is, if the Bible can be wrong about that it can be wrong about a lot of other things too and we have to USE OF BRAINS .
