ArchivedMary of the RosaryAieno Wrote: According to my knowledge the Solemnity of the Mother of God is the most ancient Marian Feast in the Church’s history. Likewise, the title "Mother of God" is the most ancient title given to Mary, given to her at the Council of Ephesus on June 22, 431. "Mother of God" in Greek "Theotókos" means "Bearer of God" or "God-Bearer". The Council declared, "If anyone does not confess that the Emmanuel is truly God and therefore that the holy Virgin is the Mother of God (Theotokos) (since she begot according to the flesh the Word of God made flesh), anathema sit." Ephesus affirmed that Mary can rightfully be called the Mother of God: Mary is not Mother of God, the Father, or Mother of God, the Holy Spirit; rather, she is Mother of God, the Son — Jesus Christ. Mary may have been called the Christ bearer and she still is called the Christ bearer. The fact is the title "Mother of God" was not given to Mary to elavate her status, but to elavate the status of Jesus Christ whom heretics claimed was not God.
