The word day in Hebrew is(yom) and it is used in at least four different ways in the first 2 chapters of Genesis.
- The 12 hour period of daylight as opposed to night.
- A Solar day of 24 hours.
- The period of light which began with the creation of light on the first day.
- The Entire six-day creative period
Everywhere in the Pentateuch the word day when used (here) with a definite article of numerical adjective means a solar day or a normally measured 24 hour day. Thus the biblical account of Creation clearly indicates that God created the world in six literal days!
