Christian/Muslim ThreadsWhat if Jews, Christians, Muslims follow their Holy Book? The difference being that the laws God set up in the OT were there to punish and correct His chosen people (Israel) only, whereas Islamic law commands you to use this brutality as a means of forcing outsiders to convert (I'm no Arabic scholar - just, by admission, regurgitating what I've read). Do not confuse what people do in the name of the Bible with what the Bible actually teaches. The OT laws of killing those that practiced sorcery and those that taught heresy were not universal, i.e. the Israelites weren't to go around killing everyone that did these things - only those within their ranks, only other Israelites, that did these things. Killing as a means of getting others to convert is not taught in the Bible, and those who try to use the Bible to justify it are usually misinterpreting passages and/or taking them out of context. I will not deny that the Bible is a bloody book, especially in the OT. But when considering this, you must remember that it is never bloody just for the sake of being bloody. When the OT Israelites marched through modern-day Israel killing Canaanites on their way to possessing their promised land, God did not command them to do it solely for the purpose of killing innocent people, nor did He command them to do it solely so that Israel could have a homeland. While God did have a plan for the Hebrews, He used that plan to also carry out the purpose of punishing the Canaanites for their wickedness that they had done for generations. While it would have been wrong for the Israelites to go out and do this with no direction from God, it was not wrong for God to order it done, because it was Him that the Canaanites were sinning against. |
