Science, Creation & Evolutionhumans run to scavange???Hey thanks! Merry Christmas to you too! We'd be talking about an ancestor that predated our apelike ancestors. All mammals (that includes bats, whales, humans, kangaroos, bears, cows, pigs, lions, wolves, aardvarks, giant sloths, mammoths, etc.) must have been descendants from rodent-like critters, who started to adapt to the niches* that became unoccupied after the dinosaur ecosystem was destroyed at the KT boundary (65 million years ago). The genetic material that is responsible for growing several sets of nipples was quite common for these early mammals and has proven to be necessary for quite some modern mammals as well. If we compare ourselves to other mammals, we see that having only two breasts is quite uncommon and the old (some would say 'devolved') genetic material for multiple nipples can now and then occur in a mutation. Notice that -since our physiology is no longer adapted to having several teats- the extra nipples often occur as non-funtional. Pictures to illustrate (contains drawing of female breasts, so be warned ): http://www.vh.org/adult/provider/anatomy/AnatomicVariants/OrganSystem/Images/51.html http://www.vh.org/adult/provider/anatomy/AnatomicVariants/OrganSystem/Images/49.html * (http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=niche: The function or position of an organism or population within an ecological community. ) |
