Christian/Muslim ThreadsScientif errors in the Koran: Shooting stars and the devilsWarning this post may chock you:
A short scientific lesson There are a range of fallacies involved here: Shooting stars (falling stars) are not stars! That is typical bad science, the typically limited knowledge of the ancient scientists, which pre-dated the religion of Islam. Falling stars are merely small rocks which we call meteoroids. When we observe a shooting star, a short-lasting line of strong light appears, this is what we call meteoroid. As they strike our atmosphere, they usually burn up, as the gas of the atmosphere heats them up; some however are large enough to pass through and strike the earth, this is what we call a meteorite. Scientist usually assume that meteoroids arrive from the asteroid belt (a highway of orbiting asteroids between Mars and Jupiter), and the smaller ones to arrive from nearby planets or moons, such as the earths Moon or Mars. Scientists believe that the asteroid belt consists of left over material from when the Sun and the planets of the solar-system were formed. There are various reasons why asteroids leave the asteroid highway, gravity from other planets could be a major factor, and collisions with other stellar bodies then breaks them into smaller entities. The meteoroids size Meteoroids are nothing but the dust emitted from these asteroids, they strike our atmosphere as e.g. a comet passes by the earth. This is where we get the meteor showers as the earth passes through a debris stream of dust following the orbit of the comet. The typical meteoroids we observe are usually no larger than the size of a pebble. The last incidence of a meteorite passing through the universe and striking the earth was in 1954, it weighed no more than 19.84 kilograms. Larger meteorites have impacted the earth as well, some of them weighing a hundred ton (Oregon 1902). In other words meteoroids are merely small pieces of rock, possibly similar to the size of a football, some larger. This is one of the main factors, which brings the Koran into question. According to the Koran shooting stars (meteoroids) are actual stars, this is a serious fallacy. Is Allah unable to detect the difference between a football size rock and an actual fusing star? The reality contrary to the Koran is painfully different, shooting stars are not stars, they are rocks, even worse shooting stars do not originate from the stars but (according to science) left over materials which was usually never included into the categories of stars, planets or moons. Why then does the Koran refer to shooting stars as the lamps (stars) which Allah beautified the lowest heaven with. Here is the Koranic text again
Abdullah Yúsuf ‘Ali in his translation of the Koran (The meaning of the Holy Qur’an, amana publications) refers to Suras 15: 17-18; 37: 6-8 and 67: 5 as shooting stars: A list of additional problems There are additional problems as well: 1 The earth and our solar-system is a part of the vast cosmological cloud of stars, not a separated entity. 2. This brings out the second problem, our solar star, must therefore be a potential missile, take a good look at the sun, think about its size; according to the Koran, that is what a shooting star is; if such a body impacted our atmosphere not only the devil but every human would pass away. 3. Which leads us to the third problem, shooting stars are a regional phenomena, not a universal one. We only observe the shooting stars from the earth, since we have such a fabulous atmosphere, which actually burns up the rock before it strikes the earth, otherwise no light would be detected. 4. Which leads to the fourth problem, I thought devils were spiritual beings, how come a rock by the size of a football would have any significant impact upon a non-material being? 5. Which leads to the fifth problem, since devils are primarily being targeted near to the earthly atmosphere because they seek to secretly listen to the Koranic recitation in heaven, are we not assuming then, that the universe is fairly small? This is confirmed by Abu Dawood, Book 40, number 470: The Koran additionally makes a serious scientific error, stars are not falling or thrown, they collapse as they use up their energy. When the energy finally is used up they turn into neutron stars, explode or transform into a black hole (if you believe every detail of such things). In other words, even though the particular passage would not refer to shooting stars it would still be a fallacy to suggest that stars are used as missiles. How shall we respond to the matter? As non-Muslims we understand the matter as a scientific fallacy; even Bucaille, the scientific guru of the modern Muslim has nothing to say about this matter: The point of the matter is: this scientific concept relies on the typical ignorance and scientific observation of the early eras; well God is all-knowing, thus we can clearly rule out that such passage is the revealed Word of God. I would again encourage the Muslim to reconsider his religious path and embrace the Christian faith, the only way to God, the only step of faith which saves from eternal hell-fire. |
