Evidence for ID and creationWhy?Mister Emu, I read this post from you yesterday and thought about it on and off all day. There is a sense of 'why' there, and I understand what you are saying. But, being a long-time dog owner myself (we currently have three, two of which are rescue animals), I think what you are interpreting as a 'why' question is actually a 'what' question. It is not 'why did you punish me?', but, rather, 'what am I to connect this punishment with? What did I do wrong?' It is not an intellectual why, but a cause and effect puzzlement. And, as a dog owner I would caution you not to confuse your animals this way. Discipline should be immedate -- and moderate. If your dog respects you as the leader of his or her 'pack', then moderate discipline is all that is needed. But if you wait too long, as you evidently have sometimes, to administer it, then the animal will not understand what the behavior was which led to the punishment and all you will have done is cause confusion. This is also a distinguishing mark of animal and human, for as bright as some animals can be, and as observant of their owners (and therefore seemingly intuitive), there are none to whom you can explain several hours later "I am punishing you because this morning you chewed on my shoe" or some such thing. They do not have the capacity to remember their own actions in that way. To the best of my knowledge, that kind of memory has been exhibited by humans only, as well as the ability to connect a punishment -- even years later in the case of some criminal offenses -- with a distant crime. Humans are unique intellectually. They are a special creation with no sign of connection in this area to any animal. |
