Christian/Muslim ThreadsBefore Jesus(pbuh), Monotheism or trinityActually, history shows that quite a few Jews actually taught that Isa 9:6 was speaking of Hezekiah. Altho' of course, I do not agree with that viewpoint, nevertheless, it was rabbinical teaching that Isa 9:6 was speaking of King Hezekiah (as well as the majority view, that it was speaking of the Messiah). So it was NOT considered blasphemous in Jewish thought! Why? Because a man being called el gibbor, (mighty god) does NOT mean he is GOD Almighty ... it means he is a mighty man; a strong, mighty warrior; a powerful man; a mighty hero In fact, the very same title is used in the plural in Ezek 32:21 where men are called mighty gods ... el gibbor in plural Check the Hebrew ... it is the same title i.e. el gibbor in plural ... Yet Ezek 32:21 is speaking of men. The KJV translates Ezek 32:21 as "The strong among the mighty" BDB states that it should be translated 'mighty heroes' The New Jerusalem Bible translates it "the mightiest heroes" Either way, Jews have always seen that Isaiah 9:6 is speaking of an anointed, special king ... predominantly the King Messiah That has always been the majority Jewish view (the minority view was that it was speaking of King Hezekiah) I am saying that to say, irrespective of whether the Jews accepted these verses as being Messianic or not; the Jews never understood these verses to speak of 'deity'; but rather of a human king upon the throne of David. Just thought I should point this out ... In conclusion then ... Isa 9:6 is speaking of a great MAN who will be made King and be given the throne of David by the ONE GOD, YAHWEH of hosts [Ezek 21:27, Luke 1:32]; this MAN's kingdom will have no end. This MAN is the Lord Messiah, the King of Israel, the Son of God [John 1:49], namely, Jesus of Nazareth. Jesus of Nazareth, is indeed the GREATEST MAN ... because YAHWEH, GOD the Father, has made him, both Lord & Messiah [Acts 2.36, 10.36; Phil 2.11] So in prophecy, the Messiah is indeed, el gibbor, mighty god who will be enthroned on the throne of David, by the zeal of YAHWEH Himself.
