Science, Creation & EvolutionNon young creation astronomy failedTO: Aineo
I think the purpose of boards like these is to better inform the public regarding issues. Now to better inform people post content necessarily must have valid reasoning. Logic obviously plays a part in valid reasoning since logic is the study of the principles of reasoning (see: logic: http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=logic ). Therefore, when someone is unintentionally or intentially putting forth posts which violate logic/good reasoning I see nothing wrong with pointing that out and in fact I think it is helpful. I think some board members recognize the need for logic being used to better arrive at various creation-evolution conclusions. For example, Tuppence, authored a thread called "A or non-A" which is located here: http://www.jesus-christ-forums.com/home/viewtopic.php?t=6263 You then wrote: I put forth quotes. The quotes were purported to be from peer reviewed science journals. I believe scholars often use quotes. Nowhere did I claim the quotes were not pulled out of context. I see no reason to say such a thing "as my quotes are not pulled out of context", since I believe quotes have their place in scholarship. Now when someone says well maybe the quotes were pulled out of context I have no problem with that. However, as I said I believe scholars often use quotes and if someone claims the specific quotes are pulled out of context it is incumbent upon them to demonstrate this matter. Lastly, regarding Genesis 1:2. You wrote:
Most of the well researched material which use footnotes etc and discuss the Hebrew/exegesis are unfortunately copyrighted. Therefore, I will make some brief statements regarding this matter and then give links for those who want to do additional study. With that being said, here are the points I will make: 1. To my knowledge and according to my sources the orthodox Jew community never favored translating this verse in the manner you described (for example, see: http://www.answersingenesis.org/creatio ... inning.asp ). I would think the orthodox Jewish community would know something about Hebrew. I realize that the Jews were predicted to reject their Messiah but there is nothing in Scripture indicating the Jewish community does not understand how to translate Hebrew. 2. The Hebrew "meod tov" in Genesis 1:31 points to perfection and not a world previously wrecked (see: http://www.answersingenesis.org/creatio ... inning.asp ). 3. Genesis 1:2 uses a "waw explicativum" and not a "waw consecutive" for the word "and" which begins the sentence. Thus, this points to no passage of time being indicated (see: http://www.answersingenesis.org/creatio ... inning.asp ). 4. Almost invariably, with one or two exceptions, the meaning of the verb is simply "was" in various passages of the Bible (see: http://www.apologeticspress.org/articles/442 ). 5. The alliterative nouns "tohu vabohu" in Genesis 1: 2 mean waste and empty and but not laying waste and desolating (see: http://www.pfo.org/thin-ice.htm ). And I believe these are just some of the major issues and time does not allow me to go into greater depth.
