Muhammad was a man with a familiar spirit called a jinn. Mohammed's inspiration and religious experiences are remarkably similar to those found in some forms of the ocult. Shamanism, for example, is notorious for fostering periods of mental disruption as well as spirit possession. Significantly Muhammad experienced Shaman-like encounters and phenomena. Further, many authorities have noted that spirit possession frequently leads to the kinds of experiences that Muhammad had of hiding in caves/tombs like noted in the Gospels.
