I do not believe God intended that His Word in Genesis regarding the creation accounts and true science are incompatible.
Most Christians fall into one of two camps - old age creationists who believe the age of the universe is billions of years with the days of Genesis 1 representing ages, not literal 24 hour days; and new age creationists who believe that the age of the universe is only thousands of years, and the days of Genesis 1 are literal 24 hour days.
Those Christians who believe in old age creation are then able to more easily accept true science which seems to indicate the universe is billions of years old. Evolution is in no way, shape or form true science. Evolution is and always will be a theory of how life evolved. Evolution has never been proved to show the mechanism of how evolution works, both in somehow evolving up the life scale to fully developed creatures, nor in evolving laterally into different species. Genesis 1:21-25 declares God created each creature "after it's own kind." So that should be the end of the story for Christians who believe God's Word is true regarding how God created creatures as fully developed creatures after their own kind, and did not let evolution somehow help God with the great diversity and complexity that exists.
Those Christians who believe in young age creation are not able to easily accept true science which seems to indicate the universe is billions of years old, and are then left with explaining creation science in terms of thousands of years.
