Comment:
So here Jesus is speaking direct, in spite of the following translations:
1. Pickthall: word saying is between brackets because it is not in the original text, same applies to Palmer.
2. Yusuf Ali put between brackets (with this message) which is also in the original text.
So here Jesus is speaking direct, as Allah spoke direct in many verses including: 3: 55, 56 and 81.
Contrast this to when Allah speaks about Mohammad in 3:20 or about the wife of Imran 3:35 (both translations of Yusuf Ali):
3:20: So if they dispute with thee, say: "I have submitted My whole self to God and so have those who follow me." And say to the People of the Book and to those who are unlearned: "Do ye (also) submit yourselves?" If they do, they are in right guidance, but if they turn back, Thy duty is to convey the Message; and in God's sight are (all) His servants.
Notice the word: “say”.
3:35: Behold! a woman of 'Imran said: "O my Lord! I do dedicate unto Thee what is in my womb for Thy special service: So accept this of me: For Thou hearest and knowest all things."
Notice the word “said”.
In verses 3:49 and 50 Jesus is speaking direct to the reader (or listener) without any qualification stating that “He said” or the like; because He is God incarnate.
It is of note that the stories of Zachariah, Mary and Jesus are narrated in this Sura.
