Science, Creation & EvolutionQuestions from Christian to Atheist or EvolutionistI am an atheist evolutionist. This is a question that is not answered, and may never be. Scientists do not know what started it all, or even whether or not it all "started." We can trace the history of time as far back as the Big Bang. This would be the start of the visible universe, not necessarily the start of the whole universe. There may be a much larger universe beyond the one we can see, and the concept of time itself may be an abstraction that is unique to our realm of the universe. Any of the toughest questions like those could be answered by invoking supernaturalism or magic. "God" is the easiest answer to any question. But we should not settle on answers like those by default. It is acceptable to leave the questions unanswered. No, DNA evidence has not shown such a thing. It is adequately explained through natural processes. You are partially mistaken. The theory of evolution does not explain the origin of life, but it does explain both the development and the reasoning. The first living organism probably evolved from a simple self-replicating molecule. Such molecules have been synthesized in laboratories. If they can reproduce and mutate, then they may evolve into greater complexity. See this page: http://www.talkorigins.org/faqs/abioprob/abioprob.html In religion, natural objects have a purpose. This is not so in science. According to the naturalistic philosophy of science, men have as much observable purpose as bees, grass, light particles, microbes, and dust. That is, there is no observable purpose. It is just the way it is. Allow me to correct you. Not all species reproduce through sexual reproduction. There are many asexual species, primarily microbes, but also some fish. Asexual species reproduce simply by one organism splitting in two. According to the most popular theory, sexual reproduction came about in order to diversify DNA. This serves to confuse and outcompete parasites. Most of the cells in your body are not human cells. You are mostly made of parasites. Abiogensis (life coming from non-life) is not observed because it is probably a very rare occurance, and the new life would have to compete with the life that is already omnipresent, life that has had a 2 billion year head start. |
