About the galaxies:
I think it is like this:
Take 2 galaxies, A and B, which are 1 billion AU apart. They are moving at opposite directions, each at a speed of 10 AU per year. 10 years after starting, the galaxies will not be 1 billion and 20 AU apart, but quite a bit more due to the stretching of space. It is the stretching of space that makes the galaxies appear to move faster then the speed of light.
But I am not quite sure on this, so don't take my word for it.
