I agree, neohuman. No one should have to go through something like that. Thank God Governor Bush had the wisdom to intervene. There is nothing Constitutional about allowing a human being to suffer and die.
Michael and some doctors are claiming that Terri is in a vegetative state. I wonder what their definition of "vegetative state" is, because it sounds like it's very broad.
I don't know about you guys, but in the video clips they've been showing, I see a woman who is very aware of what is going on around her. She followed a balloon with her eyes. She smiled when her mother kissed her. People said that she sometimes makes attempts to talk. This woman is brain damaged, but not brain dead. If she receives the proper care, there is a very good chance that she could make an excellent recovery. I don't see why Michael would advocate killing her. It's not as though he is still responsible for her. He abandoned her as soon as the money ran out, and he's living with another woman who's expecting their second child. I guess he just thinks of Terri as a liability.
For those of you who advocated the feeding tube removal, take a good look at the following symptoms of starvation. Now you tell me that Michael and the doctors were doing the right thing.
shrinkage of vital organs, such as the heart, lungs, and ovaries or testes, and their functions.
chronic diarrhea
anemia
reduction in muscle mass and weakness because of it
low body temperature
decreased ability to digest food because of lack of digestive acid production
irritability
immune deficiency
swelling from fluid under the skin
decreased sex drive
Now the symptoms of dehydration:
Persistent fatigue
Lethargy
Muscle weakness or cramps
Headaches
Dizziness
Nausea
Confusion
Forgetfulness
Deep, rapid breathing
Increased heart rate
Excessive loss of fluid through vomiting, urinating, stools or sweating
Poor intake of fluids.
Sunken eyes
Dry or sticky mucous membranes in the mouth
Skin that lacks its normal elasticity and sags back into position slowly when pinched up into a fold
Decreased or absent urine output
Decreased tears
