You are thinking in Earthly terms, Adriana. Jesus was speaking of an entirely different type of war -- the internal war. The war between good and evil. There is a huge battle taking place between light and dark forces that most humans are not aware of.
Jesus said, "Whoever does not hate his father and his mother cannot become a disciple to me. And whoever does not hate his brothers and sisters and take up his cross in my way will not be worthy of me."
The dark forces work through our thoughts and ideas, and through our friends and families. It's the greatest of plays and we are all just characters playing a part. That's all! Any ties we have in life are subject to change and for that reason they are not real. We must look for something unchanging and everlasting. What's that? The kingdom! It's right here, right now!
Gandhi said, "What difference does it make to the dead, the orphans and the homeless, whether the mad destruction is wrought under the name of totalitarianism or the holy name of liberty or democracy?"
Gandhi realized that this world, its wars, and its political structures are entirely superficial. We are not slaves because we are born into a totalitarian nation, nor are we free because we live in a democracy. We are slaves to this world. We must realize that we are beings, not bodies!
Gandhi also said, "We must become the change we want to see." As it is on the inside, so it will be on the outside. His message was clear -- if you want to change the world, change yourself! Do not point fingers.
Who are we to judge those who make war when the same forces that drive them are driving us as well? We're zombies too. Jesus said, "You see the mote in your brother's eye, but you do not see the beam in your own eye. When you cast the beam out of your own eye, then you will see clearly to cast the mote from your brother's eye."
