First of all you equated "sheol" with "purgatory" not me. Second the rich man made a request of Abraham that was denied because a great gulf exists between the torment of the damned and the comfort of the saved. Third you are pulling verses out of context to establish a false doctrine, and last you are defending your position with a private definition from a source only Catholics accept as true.
Now lets put the verses you quoted in context.
Luke 16:15-31
15 And He said to them, "You are those who justifuy yourselves in the sight of men, but God knows your hearts; for that which is highly esteemed among men is detestable in the sight of God.16 "The Law and the Prophets were proclaimed until John; since then the gospel of the kingdom of God is preached, and every one is forcing his way into it.17 "But it is easier for heaven and earth to pass away than for one stroke of a letter of the Law to fail.18 "Every one who divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery; and he who marries one who is divorced from a husband commits adultery.19 "Now there was a certain rich man, and he habitually dressed in purple and fine linen, gaily living in splendor every day. 20 "And a certain poor man named Lazarus was laid at his gate, covered with sores,21 and longing to be fed with the crumbs which were falling from the rich man's table; besides, even the dogs were coming and licking his sores.22 "Now it came about that the poor man died and he was carried away by the angels to Abraham's bosom; and the rich man also died and was buried.23 "And in Hades he lifted up his eyes, being in torment, and saw Abraham far away, and Lazarus in his bosom.24 "And he cried out and said, 'Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water and cool off my tongue; for I am in agony in this flame.'25 "But Abraham said, 'Child, remember that during your life you received your good things, and likewise Lazarus bad things; but now he is being comforted here, and you are in agony.26'And besides all this, between us and you there is a great chasm fixed, in order that those who wish to come over from here to you may not be able, and that none may cross over from there to us.'27 "And he said, 'Then I beg you, Father, that you send him to my father's house - 28 for I have five brothers - that he may warn them, lest they also come to this place of torment.'29 "But Abraham said, 'They have Moses and the Prophets; let them hear them,'30 "But he said, 'No, Father Abraham, but if someone goes to them from the dead, they will repent!"31 "But he said to him, 'If they do not listen to Moses and the Prophets, neither will they be persuaded if someone rises from the dead.'" NAS
Read the parable in context and with understanding and your false teaching of a purging of those destined for heaven is disproved and shown to be false.
1 Corinthians 3:10-15
10 According to the grace of God which was given to me, as a wise master builder I laid a foundation, and another is building upon it. But let each man be careful how he builds upon it. 11 For no man can lay a foundation other than the one which is laid, which is Jesus Christ. 12 Now if any man builds upon the foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, straw, 13 each man's work will become evident; for the day will show it, because it is to be revealed with fire; and the fire itself will test the quality of each man's work. 14 If any man's work which he has built upon it remains, he shall receive a reward. 15 If any man's work is burned up, he shall suffer loss; but he himself shall be saved, yet so as through fire. NAS
What Paul is teaching here is that if any man builds on a foundation of good works and not on a foundation of Jesus Christ, his works will be tested by fire (not the man) and if any works remain that have their foundation in Christ will be saved
as if by fire. "
As if by fire" is a metaphor and does not teach or establish purgatory.
Revelation 21:24-27
24 And the nations shall walk by its light, and the kings of the earth shall bring their glory into it. 25 And in the daytime (for there shall be no night there) its gates shall never be closed; 26 and they shall bring the glory and the honor of the nations into it; 27 and nothing unclean and no one who practices abomination and lying, shall ever come into it, but only those whose names are written in the Lamb's book of life. NAS
Nothing "
unclean or that practices abomination and lying will enter heaven.
Compare Revelation 21:27 with Revelation 21:7-8
7 "He who overcomes shall inherit these things, and I will be his God and he will be My son. 8 "But for the cowardly and unbelieving and abominable and murderers and immoral persons and sorcerers and idolaters and all liars, their part will be in the lake that burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death." NAS
Purgatory is a lie and all who teach it are liars.
1 Thessalonians 5:23-24
23 Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you entirely; and may your spirit and soul and body be preserved complete, without blame at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. 24 Faithful is He who calls you, and He also will bring it to pass. NAS
You quoted this verse to show the soul does not perish, however, when does Paul state the body, soul, and spirit will be preserved? At the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ!
The RCC takes great pride in the fact it has parts of the bodies (relics) of many saints. This alone shows that our bodies are not "preserved complete" in this world and life.
All you have established is that Jesus the Christ descended into sheol and preached to those awaiting His appearing and led the righteous captive in sheol to freedom with Him. Those in sheol awaiting judgment are still there.
When you read God's word with understanding the
interpretations of the RCC are false, heretical lies.
