Saddam's Tender Mercies
I've grown intrigued at the various ways that the liberals have tried to
make the case that life in Iraq under Saddam Hussein is less barbaric than
enduring a war of liberation. Sean Penn went to Baghdad to 'feel their
pain' and ended up with a starring role in Saddam's Propaganda
Productions.
A whole gaggle of liberal airheads in Hollywood have come together to
protest America's 'illegal and unjust war' against Iraq under the banner
of the Universal Brotherhood of Man or some such nonsense.
Actors Matt Damon and Martin Sheen and actress Anjelica Houston were among
100 TV and film stars who released a petition last month against "alarming
and unnecessary" talk of war from Washington. Alarming, yes. But
unnecessary? (They have some special Pentagon pipeline, maybe?)
Danny Glover and Harry Belafonte repeated the message on a trip to Cuba
the next day.
(Isn't there a law against that? Or does it only apply to cigars? No
matter. They're celebrities! Who else could get away with calling
Secretary of State and five-star General Colin Powell a 'house slave' --
and then travel to Cuba in defiance of a US embargo besides a celebrity?)
Uber-Democrat supporter Robert Redford wrote an open letter to Bush
suggesting that Washington should not 'intervene' in Iraq.
Intervene? Ummm, wasn't there a war? And an agreed ceasefire. What does
'agreed' mean in Hollywood?
Martin ("I'm not a president, I just play one on TV") Sheen led thousands
of people on Saturday in a rowdy protest march in downtown Los Angeles
against war in general -- and against this war in Iraq under this
administration -- in particular.
Newspapers give these guys great credibility. So does the public, and
therefore by extension, their elected representatives.
(Multimillionire Sheen once appeared before Congress during the Clinton
administration to testify on the problems encountered by the homeless.
Multi-married Liz Taylor appeared before the same assembly to testify
about AIDS prevention)
I am not saying that these guys aren't sincere. Most of them are sincerely
wrong, the rest sincerely stupid, but all of them are sincere. That's what
they do for a living. Be sincere. Nobody would shell out fifteen bucks to
watch an actor deliver an INsincere performance.
We've seen a number of sincere performances, not the least of which was
delivered by satellite by Sean Penn from Baghdad. All oppose the war,
allegedly, on humanitarian grounds.
The fact that George Bush is the commander in chief has NOTHING to do with
it. Barbra Striesand's Hollywood elite aren't still sore over Election
2000. This isn't the cynical use of life and death by the leftist elite
for political advantage. This is fueled exclusively by humanitarian
concerns honest. And there really IS a Tooth Fairy.
