Science, Creation & EvolutionIs Science Evil? This dilemma is know in evolutionary spychology. Strictly spoken, there no is no 'good' and 'evil'. We could view rape as the manifestation of a natural instinct; the urge to reproduce. This doesn't mean we have to treat rape as something natural however. We can make our own laws and decide what behaviour we will and will not accept in our society. In the interest of sustaining a relatively smooth working society, we need to protect people from being raped. So, from ANOTHER natural point of view, rape is something that is NOT a good thing (because society would be better off without it). ----- The example of the garden might not be a the best one, but I hope you get the point I tried to make: Compassion can be a good thing from a natural point of view (because it increases the survival chances of members of the same species), but it can also be a bad thing from a natural point of view, because helping nature DOES disturb ecosystems. And that was what we talked about; 'taking dominion of the earth.' Nature does not need us to fulfill a 'managerial role,' the less we interfere, the better! |
