Science, Creation & EvolutionAT MOS PHERE"Friendly"? Have you ever heard of the 'Oxygen Holocaust'? Oxygen is a very good electron acceptor and can be very damaging to living organisms. Many bacteria are anaerobic and die almost immediately in the presence of oxygen. Other organisms, like animals, have special ways to avoid cellular damage due to this element. Oxygen promotes fire and eats away at iron. And 20% of our atmosphere is made up of this poisonous gass... Earth knew a time where there was hardly any oxygen in our atmosphere, and single celled life forms lived in the oceans. Some of these -early plant life- started to produce oxygen at some point (the first photosynthesis). 'The Earth rusted' when oxygen levels started to increase. The result was the extinction of almost every life form. Those who managed to adapt (by selecting those mutations that allowed them to survive in partial oxygen atmosphere) went on to form animals that were adapted to this new and hostile atmosphere. We have actually grown dependant on oxygen: An addiction with deadly withdrawal effects Furthermore: Our atmosphere is plagued by violent lightning storms and tornadoes... I don't think we have such a friendly atmosphere, but I am glad life is so adaptive that it had managed to survive it. |
