Aineo,
I have indeed reviewed church budgets. A modern day church has virtually all the same bills that you and I do from month to month. And you make a good point (that I wasn't aware of) by stating that most churches have decided that it is the government's responsibility to take care of homelessness and poverty. But clearly such a decision is not based on God's Word. It is based on a decision to prioritize maintaining buildings over serving the community.
I am not sure what distinction you are making between the body of Christ and the church and the "people who fill the pews". According to the word, those people ARE the church. So the problem no doubt continues to rest with the church (which is run by leaders affiliating themselves with the Church), or the people.
Out of curiousity, do you personally believe that it is the government's responsibility to take care of the poor? Does the Church (the body---who undoubtedly all Christian churches claim to be a part of) have any duty to address these problems both financially and spiritually?
