ArchivedA House DividedI would say the modern Church has failed miserably in it's calling to minister to the "poor" - the poor in the material sense and in the spiritual sense. Both sides of the"poor" coin must be addressed together to achieve the desired result. The problem starts with most of the modern Church in a state of Spiritual bankruptcy. As Jesus said to the Laodiceans, "Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in..." (Rev 3:20). Jesus preached His first sermon from Isaiah 61:1-3 which summed up the mandate of His ministry and the ministry the Church was to later take up where He left off in His earthly ministry: "The Spirit of the Lord is upon me; because the Lord hath annointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound; To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord..." The Church cannot carry out the ministry of Jesus Christ without the Spirit of the Lord and His annointing upon her. But tragically most of the Church is being led by intellectual theologians void of the Spirit (Jude:19). This is the first issue that must be set in order before the Church can move forward into Her intended role. (See my post, "Jesus Is His Name" Thread, Parts 1-5, Christian Debate Forum where this very issue is addressed) However, any vane attempts to achieve unity in the Body of Christ by compromising Truth will not succeed. The Church must get back to her heritage in Jesus Christ alone as the Head of the Body and return to worshipping God in Spirit and in Truth. Only then will the world see and hear what John the Baptist's disciples did when they asked Jesus, "Art thou he that should come? Or look we for another? And in that same hour He cured many of their infirmities and plagues, and of evil spirits; and unto many that were blind he gave sight. Then Jesus answering said unto them, Go your way, and tell John what things ye have seen and heard; how the blind see, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, to the poor the gospel is preached." (Luke 7:20-22) "And as ye go, preach, saying, The kingdom of heaven is at hand. Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out devils: freely ye have received, freely give."
