Actually, Aineo, I asked for other possible options, and NN has offered some.
He is right about Dr. Behe, and many others hold that position or part of it -- that there is some kind of combination of creation and evolution that works.
The other possibility -- the eternality of matter -- I already mentioned as being part of evolution. Any importation of life or life substances to earth only pushes back the argument regarding evolution and creation. It does not alter it, however. Lamarkism is also a type of evolution -- organisms change radically into other organisms. It simply does not admit to the causes of these changes that Darwinianism does. Still, both are evolution.
Getting back to Behe, I think that he and others like him are trying to postulate a sort of 'front loaded' creation. God started it and then it was created in such a way as to evolve, with some special help in along the way. Punctuated creationism??? If you take origins, then, it is creation; but if you take everything after origins, it is evolution with a little outside help. It's a mix and match game and although I know Dr. Behe and think very highly of him, I don't think what he is trying to do is logical. Nor do I think there is any evidence for it aside from wishful thinking.
However even with all of NN's suggestions, we still either come down to evolution or creation, not only with origins but with life following. Either organisms were created by kind as original populations with the ability to VARY built in (however always within kind, or type -- think approximately family level taxonomically for most organisms if that helps), or there was some original proto-life which started life processes somehow and then through time changed/morphed/evolved into all manner of other organisms quite distinct from the original.
Even the mix and match game does not really avoid that.
(Note: I apologize for not being here much right now and for Barry not responding in the geology section. We have both been hit by a really nasty cold -- or flu? -- in the last few days and energy levels are pretty low.)
