In answer to your question about Paul.. there are two words meaning prophet in the Greek.. a Prophet who is one who foretells .. he is given a vision from God or an understanding of something that will happen and then if He is a real prophet, everything must happen.
In the days when the Bible was still being "written".. this was often the way God gave His word.. so all the prophets as we know them in the Old Testament were numbered amongst this sort of Prophet. This form of prophecy came at a price. Anyone who prophesied in the name of the Lord and not ALL of what He said happened, was called a Pseudoprophetes a false prophet and HAD to be put to death.
The other form of prophet is one who "forth tells God's Word" This is the prophecy usually meant today when someone says they "have the gift of prophecy". and is the most often used word for someone who speaks forth the mind and counsel of God. This is the one spoken of primarily of Paul in the New Testament.
Now in hebrews 1:1 we read
"In the past God spoke to our forefathers through the prophets at many times and in various ways, but in these last days, He has spoken to us by His Son, whom He appointed heir of all things and through whom He made the universe. The Son is the radiance of the Father's glory and the exact representation of His being, sustaining all things by His powerful word."
Now let's hear what Paul says about the things He said... and understand, that he was very very definite that all he was doing was telling out the word of God as the apostles had been given and He warned against listening to anyone who gave a gospel that was different to the one the apostles had given.
Ephesians 3:7-12
I became a servant of this gospel by the gift of God's grace given me through the working of His power. Although I am less than the least of all God's people, this grace was given to me, to preach to the Gentiles (non Jews) the unsearchable riches of Christ, and to make plain to everyone the administration of this mystery, which in ges past was kept hidden in God, who created all things.
His intent was that now, through the church, the manifold wisdom of God should be made known to the rulers and authorities in the heavenly realms, according to His eternal purpose which he accomplished in Christ Jesus.
In Him and through faith in Him we may approach God with freedom and confidence. I ask you therefore not to be discouraged because of my sufferings for you, which are your glory.
Paul never once claimed to be a prophet. he called himself a servant. he saught always to glorify God and He suffered horribly for that. Have you read the many verses where in the midst of writing he suddenly glimpses a vision of God.. and breaks out in praise and adoration?
for example, in romans 12:33
Can anyone not say that Paul didnot love the Lord His God with all His heart, soul, mind and strength?
"Oh the depth of the riches fo the wisdom and knowledge of God
How unsearchable His judgements
And His paths beyond tracing out.
Who has known the mind of the Lord
Or who has been His Counsellor?
Who has given to God
that God should repay Him
For in him, and through him and to him are all things
To Him be the glory forever Amen!!
