Perhaps the reason you are confused is because you are reading material that contains information on geochemistry in the FF boundary; however, the simple fact that a number of tools are used to characterize the boundary does not make the definition of the boundary a geochemical one. The FF is a time marker based on a specific set of strata and its fossil assemblage. It is a stage of geologic time. I think you are confusing its identification in the geologic record with its meaning. The age of the FF is 374.5 Ma according to the 2004 geologic time scale.
