The word Masjid is used in the original Arabic, this means a place of prostration whether it is a muslim building or a jewish one, whether there is a building there or not. The masjid at mecca wasn't always a building. According to Yusuf Ali, it was called the farthest mosque because it was the furthest west of the places of prostration known to muslims at the time. Of course this is pure apologetics as technically it was never the farthest mosque. Even if at one time in history this mosque did happen to be the farthest mosque, it does say something about the accuracy of the Qur'an... That is, the accuracy of the Qur'an has not been preserved. . |
