Christian/Muslim ThreadsJerusalem and the Fartherst Mosque
The verse uses the Arabic word Masjid which means a place of prostration. It is from the same root as sajdah which means prostration. There is a Hadith commenting on the event of Muhammads journey to the farthest masjid; Bukhari Volume 5, Book 58, Number 226: Narrated Jabir bin 'Abdullah: That he heard Allah's Apostle saying, "When the people of Quraish did not believe me (i.e. the story of my Night Journey), I stood up in Al-Hijr and Allah displayed Jerusalem in front of me, and I began describing it to them while I was looking at it." There is little doubt that the place referred to is the current location of Masjid Al-Aqsa. However, proving that Masjid Al-Aqsa qualifies as the "farthest" mosque is impossible as we all know that it is not the farthest mosque now. The problem is not with identifying the location, but with the description of "farthest" being attributed to it. Note: the first temple built by Solomon could be considered a Masjid as it was literally a place of prostration. |
