The Lord Jesus said:
In that day you will know that I am in my Father, and you in me, and I in you. (John 14:20, ESV)
I do not ask for these only, but also for those who will believe in me through their word, that they may all be one, just as you, Father, are in me, and I in you, that they also may be in us, so that the world may believe that you have sent me. The glory that you have given me I have given to them, that they may be one even as we are one, I in them and you in me, that they may become perfectly one, so that the world may know that you sent me and loved them even as you loved me. (John 17:20-23, ESV)
Hello
I believe that God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ are intrinsically one in their essential being (not just one in purpose or one in solidarity). I believe the essence of God the Father and of Jesus Christ are mutually penetrated, and they share a single common indivisible identity. They are two individuals who are inextricably one.
But in the verses I quoted above, the Lord Jesus seems to suggest that the oneness between himself and us believers would be like the oneness between himself and God the Father. Even though I gratefully accept and rejoice in the closeness and unity between the members & the Head of the body of Christ, surely there is a fundamental difference between the unity in the Trinity and the unity in the Body of Christ. I can't get my head round this. Can anyone help me think this through please?
Thanks,
Phiz
