All hallow's eve
Can you with a straight face tell me you do not see the difference in how Christmas, Easter and Halloween are perceived and practiced in the western world?
I am aware that Christmas is the Saturnalia, and that Easter is Ostera, both pagan feast days, but the difference is that Samhain was not Christianized to the extent that the other two major feast days were. In fact, I routinely have to explain to even Catholic and Episcopalian people that All Saint's Day follows Halloween, so it is "The Eve of All Hallows (Saints)." You would think they would know.
[An aside: Years ago, a Baptist pastor I was visiting had received a letter from the local Episcopal parish. For the date, they had put "Pentecost II."
Annoyed, he asked me, "What's this mean? Is this some of that Romish church year nonsense they talked about in the seminary?" When I told him it was, he smiled and began his reply. After his date, he wrote, "Washing Day." ]
