The first really does offer very little (although family values, clean fun, and entertainment that mentions Jesus occasionally are probably more productive than the alternatives in a temporal sense). However, a life truly focused on Christ is not only relevant, it is the only way to live in a way that actually means something in post-modern society. Western society is pushing toward an ethic that says that "whatever I feel is okay as long as whatever you feel is okay too. " There is a recognition that pure existentialism is not sufficient to explain everything about ourselves, so we have become mystics. In a world like that, if you are looking for that outmoded concept, truth, Jesus is the last one standing. Even "fundamentalist" religions like Islam can only give you vague assurances as to whether your life will really count or not. Jesus is not like that. He says you can have a life that means something past your death, a life that has value, and He tells you exactly how to do it. Not by being good, but by appropriating His mission of reconciling people to God as your own. No Mysticism necessary. Unfortunately, most of Christianity seems to have failed to recognize that real truth is the best thing it has going for it. We know God. We talk to Him. He Listens. We don't have to seek vague answers in mysticism. We know what happens when we die, and despite the West's post-modern "enlightenment," it has abandoned even tacit recognitioin of individual death in its search for relevance. The question I would ask is whether J.K. Rowling, or a new Bible that caters to what people want, or any other modern literary endeavor, can give you Truth. Until they can, following Christ is still the only valid life to live. Modern mysticism is lovely until you consider the fact that you could die tomorrow. Then it ceases to be much help at all. |
