Science, Creation & Evolutionsubstitute biology teacher
Oops, sorry about calling you 'he.' Evolution is a process that takes millions of years. New species do not appear overnight. Saying that animals can not adapt fast enough to escape extinction does not deny evolution. (Some would even argue that extinction is indeed a part of evolution, because it frees up biological niches for other species to occupy). The dodo evolved into a flightless bird, that did not have any natural enemies on the islands on which it lived. When men first arrived on the island, they were hungry and needed food (food was always a problem on long sea voyages). The dodo was used as food, and eventually died out because humans destroyed its habitat and introduced predators. The dodo was first sighted around 1500 and was wiped out somewhere around 1690 (reports vary slightly) This is not enough time to adapt to such a sudden introduction of predators. Sharks are not on the verge to be wiped out. It is very likely that there are species of shark no one has ever seen before and are not in any danger of our destructive habits. Some of the more sighted species of shark (which get caught in our fishing nets or are hunted because they pose a possible threat) are getting smaller in numbers however. Once again, evolution takes A VERY LONG TIME. (Let me know if you want additional links to back this up) I hope your naive post was merely meant ot provoke (which it did quite effectively, because I'm quite enjoying writing a reply), because - as I see it - your are suggesting that a species should either evolve into something that can withstand a human (which can and will use guns against threatening animals) or go extinct... And it should do so in a very short timespan (within 2 centuries. Have you seen any species evolve within the last two centuries? Well perhaps the moth Biston betularia after the Industrial Revolution, but nothing else elvolves so fast. See more about this in the paragraph 'What is evolution' here) And I'm even thinking you are using this argument in an attempt to disprove evolution. But maybe that's just me. |
