Christian/Muslim ThreadsWhat did Jesus look like?Well, since Jesus was Semitic, He would have had an olive complexion and dark hair. The only description I can find in Scripture is: The first Christian pictures are found in the catacombs of Rome. You can find a mass of information in the Internet using "christian iconography" as your search criteria. The Orthodox faiths were the first group to use icons, which later was adopted in the west where statues were used as well as pictures. As to the cross, it became a Christian symbol in about the 4th century because Jesus was crucified on a Roman cross. Catholic/Orthodox groups call it a crucifix and have an image of a man hanging on the cross. Protestants adopted an empty cross during the Reformation as we consider any image to be a violation of God's law. Some Christians avoid the use of a cross as even the cross can be viewed as an image that is worshipped. The only symbol we know for a fact was used by 1st century Christians was an outline of a fish, which designated locations where Christians could worship without fear of persecution. The reason for a fish was Jesus told the apostles (some of whom were fishermen) He would make them fishers of men. |
