It's not something we're told not to do - it's something that we need to do, because (a) Scripture was not written in our original language, (b) Scripture was written thousands of years ago by people who belonged to an entirely different culture and (c) Scripture contains a mixture of literal and symbolic language which must be carefully studied if we are to understand it correctly. That merely begs the question "What is plainly taught in Scripture?" And that's where interpretation comes in. You're simply arguing from the assumption that your understanding of Scripture is the correct one and ours is wrong. You're not making any attempt to defend your understanding and prove that ours is incorrect. Why should I accept your view of Scripture simply because you think it's the right one? Unless you can show me why it's the right one, I see no reason to accept your interpretation. |
