Homosexual Discussion ForumBisexualityI never said 'ego dystonic homosexuality' can be handled by society. I believe it to be caused by society and a mental health professional can be very helpful in overcoming such mental problems. I would ask the teen why he/she would not want to be gay in the first place. I didn't want to be gay as well only because I was taught by society that being gay is evil and sinful. After I rid myself of such deceitful thoughts, I had no reason to dislike being gay other than social prejudices. Even then, I few such social prejudices as a blessed challenge in my life to make me a better person. Number one... sexual orientation cannot be changed and there is a lot of evidence to show that such attempts can lead to further mental problems that can cause suicide. Number two... I would never force anyone to do anything. Should they ignore my warning on conversion therapy and seek such treatment, they do so at their own peril. I would, of course, always support them no matter what and be prepared to help them should (or when) their attempts fail. Sexuality is not "hard-wired" but neither can it be controlled. For the vast majority of people, their sexual orientation stays constant through out the majority of their lives. Because such 'professional help' (I am assuming you mean conversion therapy) would cause them more distress and increase their risk of suicide. I wouldn't necessarily deny them their right to that choice but I would definitely recommend against it. |
